Winter at the Merrymeeting Arts Center kicks off with the 4th Annual Ice & Smelt Festival!
Ice and Smelt Festival will open with a community party on February 5 at MAC gallery, 9 Main Street, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m., celebrating the opening of the exhibition, “Winter Darkness/Winter Light.” Come see how local artists portray the delights of winter in Maine, as well as the mysteries of a season that gives us Groundhog Day, Candlemas, Mardi Gras, the myth of Persephone and the Lunar New Year. We provide the live music and art: you bring your favorite refreshments, and energy, to share!
Saturday’s activities will begin at 1. There will be indoor and outdoor activities including the ever popular Best Beard Content where you can see the finest in facial hair that Bowdoinham has to offer. Come decorate a smelt letting your inner fashion designer run wild. And…if you don’t have a beard OR you would like to decorate the one you have…come use materials and imagination to festoon your face. The gallery will be open all afternoon with music and the art of “Winter Darkness/Winter Light.”
At 5 p.m., in collaboration with the Bowdoinham Food Pantry, MAC will open the “back room” at 9 Main St. for a Soup Supper. Join us for fabulous soups and breads. Again this year, profits from the event will support both Merrymeeting Arts Center and our neighbors at the Food Pantry! $5 for a bowl of soup in a paper bowl or purchase a bowl made by one of our potters for $15 and the soup is free.
For more information, check out the Merrymeeting Arts Center website www.merrymeetingartscenter.org as well as the Town of Bowdoinham website www.bowdoinham.com.
As always outdoor events will be determined by the weather and the final schedule of all events – indoors and out – will be posted online a few days before the event (snow/rain date is February 8).
